Besides impressing people at your high school reunion, what makes you proud of owning your own business? Building a business from the ground up? Seeing your ideas become reality? Solving your customers’ problems? The answer is probably all of the above and more. The end results make all the struggles worth it. I know it does for me.

The iconic image of a small business owner has definitely changed in recent years from mom and pop minding the store to a twentysomething tech genius in flip-flops and a T-shirt, but the truth is small business owners have never fit any one mold. From entrepreneurial kids to seniors who start businesses instead of retiring, there are 28 million small businesses in the U.S. and they (you) created nearly 2 million of the roughly 3 million private-sector jobs generated in 2014.

With National Small Business Week right around the corner (May 4-8), small business owners have much to celebrate. New research from Kabbage shows that small business optimism is at a three-year high. Ninety-five percent of small business owners Kabbage surveyed expect to grow their revenue in 2015. And in a recent Wasp Barcode survey, 47 percent of small businesses report more confidence in the economy than 12 months ago.

So next month as the nation celebrates you, the small business owner, make plans to strut your stuff and embrace your entrepreneurship with the pride you should. More than 7 million of the 11 million jobs created during the economic recovery have been generated by startups and small enterprises. Now that’s really something to celebrate.
